I knew this guy in college once who had a roommate who was lactose intolerant. In order to better understand his roommate and his lifestyle, he decided to pretend he had the same problem. As far as I remember, he tried it for a month, and at the end was a far wiser guy...who still liked dairy.
Something about that experience inspired me, and I always had a secret desire to try it. I happen to be a certified, card carrying dairy addict though, so the timing never seemed quite right. Then, one day a few months ago, I found this TED talk:
Again I felt inspired, and just in time for the biggest goal setting day/week/month of the year! I made all my plans to go dairy free for 30 days. I figured that nothing much happens in January so that was a safe month to forgo cheese and chocolate and creamy soups and ice cream and pretty much everything delicious. And I am going to Hawaii at the end of the month which may have been a bit of added motivation... I even let my well stocked butter shelf (the one in the freezer as well as the one in the fridge) run out. That's when I knew I meant business.
January 1st rolled around. Breakfast, dairy free. Lunch, dairy free. Was I fasting? Well, maybe. Dinner? Hot dogs. Dairy free? Check. But then the sugar cravings started. That would have been okay if I had non-dairy sugar around, but I am a dessert snob and things that don't include chocolate or butter just don't make the cut.
So I decided that January would be "Write in your Journal for 30 Days" month instead.
:)
Dairy-free works better in the summer when there is fresh produce looking lovely all around you begging you to eat healthy anyway. The winter was made so that people could have an excuse to eat comfort foods. And just try to name a dairy free comfort food. There isn't one, told you so!
So I'll keep you posted on how July goes! :)
I am writing this to ask for ideas. I used my journal writing time last night to brainstorm a bit, and I have a nice little list going. But my brain thinks the way it always has, and likes and dislikes the same things it always has, and the ideas I came up with to stretch myself are a lot like the New Years Resolutions I have had and never kept my whole life. (I guess that's why we shorten the "Do" period and focus on 1 month at a time...you know, manageable chunks where the relief of going back to old habits is still in sight). Anyway, just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for me for things I could try doing (or giving up) for a month at a time.
The other day we were minding our own business relaxing at home. Jonny was working on his computer and I was doing dishes. Then we realized it was far quieter in the house than it should be when it isn't nap time. A little rustling noise alerted us of the whereabouts of a certain 2ft someone. We looked everywhere, but Jack was no where to be seen. We did find this little furry raccoon digging through our recycling though...
